Citizenship by Bitcoin: A New Frontier for Crypto Investors

El Salvador stands out as the only country offering a direct citizenship-by-Bitcoin program. Through its Freedom Visa, investors can secure Salvadoran citizenship by donating $1 million in Bitcoin (BTC) or USD Tether (USDT) to the government, supporting social and economic development initiatives.

Several other crypto-friendly countries offer alternative pathways:

  • Portugal: Through its Golden Visa, investors can qualify for residency by investing in regulated crypto-friendly investment funds, leading to EU citizenship in five years.​
  • Vanuatu: Accepts citizenship-by-investment applicants who convert their crypto holdings into fiat before making the required donation.​
  • Antigua and Barbuda: Allows applicants to use converted crypto funds to qualify for its Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP).​
  • Hong Kong: While cryptocurrencies are not approved assets for direct investment under its New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme (New CIES), recent developments now mean that crypto assets can be used as proof of wealth. Applicants must show they control assets worth at least HK$30 million ($3.9 million), and then invest that in approved assets to obtain residency.
