Where the Antigua and Barbuda passport takes you
The Antigua and Barbuda passport carries visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 151 destinations, 22nd on the Henley Passport Index and second of the five Caribbean citizenship-by-investment passports. It includes the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, Brazil, Singapore and Hong Kong. It does not include the United States, Canada or Australia, and Antigua holds no US E-2 treaty.
Henley's 2026 index puts Antigua and Barbuda at around 154 destinations, ranked 22nd; the site's own dataset says 151. Our list below, which counts territories as well as countries, comes to 161 entries without a visa in advance (127 visa-free, 32 on arrival, 2 with an eTA) and 42 that require a visa. Counts differ between passport indices because each treats territories, transit rules and visa-on-arrival categories differently. Treat any single number, ours included, as a snapshot: access is granted bilaterally and can be withdrawn without notice, as the section on what changed shows.
What it opens, and what it does not
The Schengen Area as a whole, plus United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy.
Visa-free or eTA: Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, China, Malaysia, Philippines. On arrival or eVisa: Thailand, India, United Arab Emirates, Turkey.
Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Panama, Costa Rica, Peru.
South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Mauritius, Tanzania.
The United States, Canada and Australia. Canada withdrew its waiver in 2017; Antiguans who have held a Canadian visa in the past ten years, or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, can fly in on an eTA instead, which is a partial exception worth knowing.
The full list, by region
Every destination, sorted by region, with the type of access and the permitted stay. Visa-free means you board with the passport alone; visa on arrival and eTA mean a fee or an online form, not a consulate; eVisa means an application in advance, online; visa required means a consulate. Notable destinations that still require a visa: United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Japan, Indonesia, Israel, Morocco.

237 destinations, countries and territories, sorted by region. S marks the Schengen Area, where one entry rule covers all members. Compiled on 21 September 2026 from the published entry requirements of each destination, as collated in Wikipedia's visa requirements table, each row of which cites its source. Rules change without notice: confirm with the destination's consulate before you book.
What changed, and what is under review
The United Kingdom: still open, now with an ETA
Antigua and Barbuda passport holders do not need a UK visa for short visits, but since 2025 they need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), applied for online before travelling and valid for two years or until the passport expires. It is a pre-screening, not a visa, and the vast majority are granted within days. Do not board without one: airlines check.
Schengen: ETIAS is coming
The EU's ETIAS pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026. When it goes live, Antigua and Barbuda passport holders will apply online before their first trip, as they already do for the UK. It does not change who is visa-exempt; it adds a screening step. The Entry/Exit System that records border crossings electronically has been in operation since late 2025.
The European question
Regulation (EU) 2025/2441, adopted on 26 November 2025 and in effect since 30 December 2025, amended the EU's visa suspension mechanism so that running an investor citizenship scheme, citizenship granted for payment to people with no genuine link to the country, is now a self-standing ground for suspending visa-free access. In its Eighth Report under that mechanism (COM(2025) 792, 19 December 2025) the Commission named all five Eastern Caribbean programmes as a continuing concern.
In July 2026 Antigua and Barbuda's own government published its account of a letter dated 25 June 2026 from Commissioner Magnus Brunner, asking the five states to phase out their programmes by 1 June 2028. The Commission has not published the letter and the other four governments have not confirmed the date, so on this page it is reported, not asserted.
◇ What this means today: nothing has been suspended. Schengen access for Antiguan and Barbudan passport holders is unchanged, any suspension would need a separate EU decision, and a suspension would remove a travel waiver, not revoke a citizenship already granted. What it does mean is that the Schengen access being sold in 2026 carries a documented regulatory risk that did not exist two years ago. If Europe is the reason you are buying, that belongs in the decision.
China, since 2015
Antigua and Barbuda and China signed a mutual visa waiver in 2015, still in force: 30 days visa-free. Among the Caribbean five only Grenada and Dominica share it.
How it ranks against the alternatives
All five Caribbean programmes sell broadly the same document. The table below is the honest version of the comparison: the passports are within twelve destinations of each other, and the meaningful differences are price, processing time and Grenada's E-2 treaty with the United States.
| Programme | Destinations | From | Timeline | Running since |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| St Kitts & Nevis | 157 | USD 250,000 | 4–6 months | 1984 |
| Antigua & Barbuda | 151 | USD 230,000 | 4–6 months | 2013 |
| Saint Lucia | 147 | USD 240,000 | 6–9 months | 2015 |
| Grenada | 146 | USD 235,000 | 6–9 months | 2014 |
| Dominica | 145 | USD 200,000 | 6–9 months | 1993 |
Destination counts follow the Henley Passport Index base (visa-free, visa on arrival and eTA) and vary by index and month. Minimums are the single-applicant donation route after the 2024 OECS harmonisation, which set a common floor of USD 200,000 across the region.
The five are compared route by route in our Caribbean citizenship by investment comparison.
How the passport is obtained
Antigua and Barbuda issues its passport to citizens, and citizenship comes by descent, by naturalisation after residence, or through the Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment programme, established in 2013.
- National Development Fund donation: from USD 230,000 for a single applicant or a family of up to four, after the 2024 OECS harmonisation. Non-refundable. The flat family price is why Antigua is the cheapest of the five for larger households.
- Approved real estate: from USD 300,000 in a government-approved development, held for at least five years. Our list of eligible projects covers what is actually on sale.
- University of the West Indies Fund: USD 260,000 for a family of six or more, which includes one year of tuition for one member.
- Due diligence and approval by the Citizenship by Investment Unit, with a mandatory interview: four to six months from a complete file.
Antigua is the one Caribbean programme with a residence requirement: five days in the country during the first five years of citizenship, to keep it. It is a formality, but it is a legal one.
Who this passport is actually for
Larger families, for whom the flat-rate donation makes this the cheapest of the five; holders of a narrow passport who need Europe, the UK and China without a visa; anyone wanting a contingency nationality with a light residence formality.
Anyone whose objective is the United States or Canada, anyone buying primarily for Schengen access without weighing the EU review, and anyone expecting a passport to change their tax residence on its own. It does not.
The questions we get every week
How many countries can I visit visa-free with an Antigua and Barbuda passport?
Around 151 to 154 destinations visa-free or visa on arrival depending on the index, ranked 22nd by Henley, including the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, Brazil, Singapore and Hong Kong. Our own list on this page, which also counts territories, runs a little higher.
Can I travel to the United States with an Antigua passport?
Not without a visa. Antigua and Barbuda is not in the US Visa Waiver Program and holds no E-2 investor treaty. Canada also requires a visa, unless you have held a Canadian visa in the past ten years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, in which case an eTA suffices for air travel.
Do Antigua citizens need a visa for the UK?
No visa, but since 2025 an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is required, applied for online before travelling and valid for two years.
Is Schengen access going to be withdrawn in 2028?
No decision has been taken and no date is confirmed. Regulation (EU) 2025/2441, in force since 30 December 2025, made running a citizenship-by-investment programme a self-standing ground for suspending visa-free travel, and the Commission named the five Caribbean programmes in December 2025. The 1 June 2028 date comes from the Antigua and Barbuda government's account of a Commission letter that the Commission has not published. Schengen access is unchanged today.
Can Antigua citizens travel to China without a visa?
Yes, for stays of up to 30 days under the mutual visa waiver signed in 2015. Grenada and Dominica have the same access; St Kitts and Saint Lucia do not.
Do I have to live in Antigua to keep the citizenship?
Almost not: the programme requires five days of physical presence in Antigua and Barbuda during the first five years after citizenship is granted. There is no requirement before the grant and none after the first five years.
How does the Antigua passport compare with St Kitts and Grenada?
St Kitts & Nevis reaches 157 destinations, Antigua 151 and Grenada 147. The blocs that matter are common to all three. Antigua's distinguishing feature is price for families; Grenada's is the US E-2 treaty; St Kitts's is the widest reach and the fastest file.
