Where the Nauru passport takes you
The Nauru passport carries visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 86 destinations, which puts it in the low fifties of the Henley Passport Index. What it opens is regional: Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and most of Southeast Asia, the Gulf states, Russia, and the whole Pacific. What it does not open is every market a Western buyer tends to assume: the Schengen Area, the United States and Canada all require a visa, and the United Kingdom withdrew visa-free access on 9 December 2025, citing the citizenship programme by name.
Henley's 2026 index puts Nauru at roughly 86 destinations, ranked around 52nd; our own list below, which counts territories as well as countries, comes to 90 entries without a visa in advance (58 visa-free, 29 on arrival, 3 with an eTA) and 97 that require a visa. Both are snapshots: the United Kingdom's decision removed one of the most valuable destinations on the list in a single day. Counts differ between passport indices because each treats territories, transit rules and visa-on-arrival categories differently. Treat any single number, ours included, as a snapshot: access is granted bilaterally and can be withdrawn without notice, as the section on what changed shows.
What it opens, and what it does not
Russia. Not the Schengen Area.
Visa-free or eTA: Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Israel. On arrival or eVisa: Thailand, India, Qatar.
Panama, Costa Rica, Peru, Dominican Republic.
Kenya, Egypt, Mauritius, Tanzania, Rwanda.
The Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia (an online e600 visitor visa, not a waiver). If Europe or North America is the point, this is the wrong passport, and no discount changes that.
The full list, by region
Every destination, sorted by region, with the type of access and the permitted stay. Visa-free means you board with the passport alone; visa on arrival and eTA mean a fee or an online form, not a consulate; eVisa means an application in advance, online; visa required means a consulate. Notable destinations that still require a visa: United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands.

237 destinations, countries and territories, sorted by region. S marks the Schengen Area, where one entry rule covers all members. Rules change without notice: confirm with the destination's consulate before you book.
What changed, and what is under review
The United Kingdom, 9 December 2025
Until the end of 2025 a Nauruan passport entered the United Kingdom without a visa. On 9 December 2025 the Home Office imposed a visit visa requirement on all Nauru nationals with immediate effect, in a written ministerial statement that named the citizenship-by-investment programme as the reason. Travellers with bookings made before the cut-off had until 20 January 2026 to arrive. Nauruans are no longer eligible for the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation and need a Direct Airside Transit Visa even to change planes in London.
◇ Several passport-index sites and agent pages still list the United Kingdom as visa-free on a Nauruan passport. They are out of date. Mobility indices also list Ireland as open; given the UK decision and the Common Travel Area, verify that directly before booking.
What Nauru cannot lose
Nauru never had Schengen access, so the mechanism the EU built in 2025 to punish investor-citizenship schemes, Regulation (EU) 2025/2441, has nothing to suspend. That is the honest way to read the risk: the exposure is to bilateral arrangements like the UK's, not to a bloc-wide decision, and the UK has already shown that exposure is real.
How it ranks against the alternatives
Nauru's natural comparison is Vanuatu, the other Pacific citizenship-by-investment passport. Since Vanuatu lost Schengen and UK access, the two documents reach broadly the same places at very different prices.
| Programme | Destinations | Schengen | United Kingdom | From | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nauru | 86 | No | Visa required since 9 Dec 2025 | US$90,000 to 31 Dec 2026, then US$115,000 | 3–5 months |
| Vanuatu | 88 | No | Visa required since 19 Jul 2023 | US$130,000 | 1–3 months |
Destination counts follow the Henley Passport Index and vary by index and month. Neither Pacific passport reaches the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, the United States or Canada in 2026.
Neither is a substitute for a Caribbean passport if Europe matters: the five Caribbean programmes still carry Schengen access, at two to three times the price. The full picture of what is on the market is in our guide to every citizenship by investment programme.
How the passport is obtained
Nauru issues its passport to citizens, and citizenship comes by descent, by naturalisation after residence, or through the Nauru Economic and Climate Resilience Citizenship Program, announced at COP29 in November 2024 and opened on 21 January 2025.
- Contribution to the Treasury Fund. US$105,000 at launch, restructured to US$115,000 in February 2026, and discounted to US$90,000 for a single applicant under the Iruwa Initiative until 31 December 2026. Non-refundable. Application, due diligence and passport fees come on top, so the all-in figure for one applicant is closer to US$100,000.
- Due diligence. Source-of-funds documentation, police certificates and a background check by the Nauru Program Office. Three to five months from a complete file.
- Oath and passport. No visit to Nauru is required at any stage, and there is no residence obligation afterwards.
The programme is young, its fees have moved three times in eighteen months, and the United Kingdom's decision is the proof that the risks in this sector are not theoretical. Our guide to the programme sets out the case for and against.
Who this passport is actually for
Holders of a narrow passport who travel in Asia, the Gulf and the Pacific; families wanting a low-cost contingency nationality with no residence obligation; anyone who already has European or North American access through another document.
Anyone whose objective is the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, the United States or Canada, and anyone buying a first second passport who cannot absorb the loss of a further destination. Nauru has already lost one.
The questions we get every week
How many countries can I visit visa-free with a Nauru passport?
Around 86 destinations visa-free or visa on arrival according to the Henley Passport Index, ranked in the low fifties. Our own list on this page, which counts territories as well as countries, comes to a little over 90 entries without a visa in advance. It does not include the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, the United States or Canada.
Can I travel to the United Kingdom with a Nauru passport?
Not without a visa. The United Kingdom imposed a visit visa requirement on all Nauru nationals on 9 December 2025, citing the citizenship-by-investment programme. Any page telling you the UK is visa-free on a Nauruan passport is out of date.
Does a Nauru passport get me into Europe?
No. The Schengen Area, Ireland and the United Kingdom all require a visa. Nauru has never had an EU visa waiver, so there is none to lose under the EU's 2025 suspension rules, but there is also none to use.
Which useful destinations are visa-free?
Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Russia and the United Arab Emirates, plus most of Southeast Asia and the Pacific on a visa-free or visa-on-arrival basis. The full list by region is above.
How much does Nauru citizenship cost?
The principal contribution is US$115,000, discounted to US$90,000 for a single applicant until 31 December 2026. Application, due diligence and passport fees are additional. There is no residence requirement and processing takes three to five months.
Is the Nauru passport a good second passport?
For a single applicant who does not need European or American access, it is the best value citizenship available anywhere: 86 destinations for US$90,000 in three to five months. As anyone's only second citizenship it is a weaker choice, because a programme that has already cost its citizens visa-free access to one major economy may cost them more.
